The 1st time we heard guitars, we listened to their track “Keep In Mind.” The song was sad yet beautiful and drew us right in. Their tunes are a blend of psych rock, folk, and alternative country, and what a nice blend it is. Their tracks are smooth and relaxing. You’ll find a lot of acoustic guitar with duet style singing. I would love to see these guys as my 1st show of the day at a music festival. It would be a great way to start the day. Plus, how could you not check out a band that calls themselves Guitars.

The trio Music For Your Plants is aptly named. Your plants will love it. It’s kind of hard to classify their sound into a single genre. Their music sounds like progressive rock chilling on a remote tropical island with a bunch of synths, while plants move to the music. Yes, a progressive tropical synth plant dance party. Their first album is nothing short of incredible. The layering and guitar is fantastic, and I just love how every song really does make you feel like you’re sitting on a tropical beach sipping a beer. You’ll know you have the right one if it has big gold chain on it.

MUSIC FOR YOUR PLANTS is a threesome of recording artists currently situated in Tallinn, Estonia. MFYP melts super hi enrgy tropical fidelity into degenerate prog n kraut rock influenced pops. I had a chance to meet Max years ago. We both talked about our love for music, our favorite bands, etc. He also told me about his passion for the guitar. Fast forward to today. We are blessed to hear Max absolutely dominate the strings. To be honest, I’m nothing short of amazed by his ability to manhandle a guitar. Some of his songs have a cool mellow feel while others melt your face clean off. If your a fan of Buckethead, then Max Eve is right down your alley. Max has just released his first album, “Vertigo.” Feel free to listen to it right here, or you can purchase this fantastic work of art on iTunes. My personal favorite is “Built And Broken.” Just like all of his songs, It’s layered with multiple guitar riffs that are equally hard as they are melodic. Keep your eye on this one. His music is not to be unheard.

I'm an instrumental guitarist from Atlanta, Ga who tries to explore a concept of melodic storytelling; with music, not with words. I have always been fascinated by music's many faces and draw my influences from a WIDE range of genres. Black Whales (black * whAYles), n. : Flowers on drugs, warm-hearted spaghetti-westerns, reverbsoaked, tubey riffs in the hay amidst an organized chaos of booming and danceable rhythms, honeysticky melodics, jangly guitar hooks, tambourines, shaker magic.
Origins , the debut EP from Seattle, WA’s Black Whales will get you good. It will hit all of your sweet spots, it will surprise you with its seemingly effortless, effortlessly seamless songwriting. It will cause you, while in the middle of going through your pile of releases, to excitedly remember that brilliant bands that are just at the start of undoubtedly great journeys are indeed sometimes in said pile (this will happen because Black Whales is such a band).
The quintet officially formed in early 2008. With limited dough and loose song ideas, Black Whales entered Soundhouse Recording and Chroma Sound studios with producer Zack Reinig in early 2008 to record together for the first time, and the resulting fire, drive and intuitively addictive nature of their Origins EP both solidified each members’commitment to and excitement about the band. Before, Black Whales were a good idea; a great project—after leaving the studio, Black Whales were a unit. A team. A Band with a capital B.
Thus, Origins’ thematic content is twofold: obviously, it’s the band’s recorded starting point. More importantly, however, it’s each member shaking off the past and everything that goes with it. As lead vocalist/guitarist Alex Robert explains, “No memories, no regrets, no heartbreak, no blood. The album is meant to sound wide-eyed and optimistic but with lots of ghosts and memories still hanging around. I guess that's as close as it gets to thematic.”
Indeed, on the title track (which starts with a bright, mellow guitar line that is then built upon with echoey toms that are then built upon with more deeply reverbed guitars that sound like they were recorded in a tank across the room), Black Whales’ refrain is “I don’t owe you anything./I don’t owe you anything.” They’re not being dismissive, just honest, confident, explanatory.
There’s so much darkness in their pop, and there’s so much brightness in their shade. Black Whales are far from being one-dimensional; they’ve done what, if one is honest with oneself, only happens rarely: they’ve found perfect matches and musical foils with each other. They’ve found an incredibly textural, experimentally off-center, perfectly hearthitting way of bringing their amazing songs to fruition. Again, quoting Robert: “I think this record shows what kind of music we would have wanted to listen to, before recording it...if that makes sense.”
It does. Black Whales are a force recorded. Black Whales are a force live. Black Whales is the kind of band, and Origins the kind of EP, that will reward you for caring about music…and they’re just getting started.

Misiiko and Kuhmoo is the stage name of Tipton Murphy and Tyler Andere. These guys have a downtempo electronic sound that’s great to close your eyes and relax to. Their songs have a beautiful structure, but it’s then bathed in some interesting eerie sounds and some creepy yet angelic chorus. This strange mix of beautiful chill music layered with dark tones really creates a unique style. Their first two songs are entitled “DTUJJJ” and “LULL.” I really like both of these songs, and you should too if you’re a fan of any type of lounge or downtempo electronic music.

Albatross is an Athens, Georgia-based rock band that creates a blend of blues, jam, and funk that comes from the soul. They play shows around Athens (Iris’s hometown) regularly, but they actually caught our ears on Facebook a while back. Albatross’s self-described genre on Facebook is “indescribable jazz/blues/funk/rock,” which I think is pretty accurate. If you must have a comparison, their sound is most similar to Back Door Slam and the Derek Trucks Band, and I can definitely hear the influence of the great Allman Brothers Band. The two live tracks included in the audio player above show you that Albatross can really jam!
If you’re digging their sound, go see them live some time or visit their Facebook and Myspace pages for more music.
Albatross is Dustin Urich on lead guitar and lead vocals, Matt Urich on lead guitar and backing vocals, Drew Hart on bass, and the lineup is completed with Scott Tracy on drums.

I compare the UnderGrounds to the 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watch Band, and Moby Grape. And of course don’t forget the influence of Syd Barrett -era Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Cream. The UnderGrounds’ first 2 officially released tracks have a bold bluesy sound, and we can’t wait for more.

The inaugural Savannah Stopover Festival, capitalizing on the logistical good fortune of Savannah, Georgia’s proximity to interstates 95 and 10, will present traveling musicians with a welcoming place to play en route to Austin’s prestigious SXSW Music Festival. The small, vibrant coastal community is rife with a unique brand of lowcountry hospitality and southern gothic ambiance, not to mention home to a burgeoning music scene, music-hungry demographic, and established arts community. The four-day festival will merge music, visual arts, and technology components – much in the spirit of SXSW itself – in an intimate, historical setting and at a price unrivaled by any music festival of like scale and scope.

A collaborative effort of MusicFile Productions and countless volunteers, partners, vendors, and media sponsors, the Savannah Stopover will showcase over 50 bands in more than ten local venues. Bands will enjoy the quirky, shamelessly social elements of Georgia’s Hostess City while festival-goers will be exposed to up-and-coming bands in closer, more personal environs.
