Artist Spotlight: Starnes & Shah

Genre: Folk, Singer/Songwriter

Junkies' Description:

Dania Abu Shaheen (Shah) & Zilpha Starnes (Starnes) are two folk musicians from the opposite ends of the Earth. We don’t know how a girl from Texas and a girl from Lebanon started a group, but lets be glad they did because their interesting spin on the folk genre is bliss. Normally, the keyboard has to sit on the sidelines during many of history’s folk songs, but it’s a refreshing twist to hear it to be front and center in many of their newer tracks thanks to Starnes. Then we have Shah’s guitar work. Their early material is much more on the acoustic side while their later material needs an outlet or two. Unplugged material is the most vulnerable while the electric guitar gets your blood pumping. Shah does a great job playing in both instances. Their poetic lyrics spill out onto the mike quite nicely as they sing most of their songs together in harmony. All of this together, you have yourself two ladies that are sensational singer/songwriters.

Official Bio:

Starnes&Shah, featuring vocal duo Dania Abu-Shaheen (guitar/vocals) and Zilpha Starnes (keyboards/vocals), was formed in Astoria, NY in 2005. Bring a poet/songwriter from Lebanon together with a choirgirl from Dallas, Texas, and you get a unique musical counterpoint.

The songs range from pared down acoustic ballads to rock anthems complete with choral arrangements and layered guitar effects. They are stories rendered with Dania’s poetry and music. Zilpha’s harmonies play between exchange and tension to produce a signature sound.

On November 12, 2011 Starnes&Shah will release "Red Brick Tide," their third full-length album. "Red Brick Tide" packs a rock'n'roll punch with vocal and compositional complexity. Quirky synthesizers and hard-driving guitars augment the duo's trademark harmonies to conjure up nuanced narratives.

Starnes&Shah have released an acoustic EP titled "Here Again on the Island" (2006) and two full-length albums, "Summer in the Woodshed" (2007), and "Pink White Blue Green" (2009), featuring full band arrangements.

S&S have played shows in Northeastern cities including Burlington, Portland, Boston, Philadelphia, and their current home city, New York. They continue to play regular shows in New England and New York, and will be touring to promote "Red Brick Tide" in the spring and summer of 2012.

Artist Spotlight: Poynte

Genre: Hard Rock

Junkies' Description:

For hard rock fans, you may find this spotlight a Poynte of interest. OK, forget the lame joke; we have an amazing band for you. Years ago, we went to see Drowning Pool live and got there early. We're glad we did because we got to witness Poynte's performance. It was full of passion, yet their heavy guitar riffs were like a teeth shattering kick to the mouth. Years later, their January 2012 EP “One More Day” shows the same passion and power as that live show we were lucky to see. For example, their song “Forever” has beautiful yet somewhat bleak lyrics surrounded by a tornado of earthshaking bass, drums, and guitar. Also, if you like a band with solos (and who doesn’t), then there are plenty to be heard in their tracks. Originally, the band came up with their name as a play-on acronym. POYNTE: Persons Of Young Nature Torturing the Elderly, but we don’t know if they kept the acronym idea anymore. As mentioned in their bio, Poynte’s shared the stage with bands that include 10 Years, Drowning Pool, Saliva, Pop Evil, Taproot, Fuel, and many more. As you would expect, if you like those bands, then Poynte is one to add to the collection.

Artist Spotlight: Mike And Cody

Genre: Dancepop, Electronic, Synthpop

Junkies' Description:

Whenever we hear dancepop that has somewhat of an 80s vibe, our first thought is usually, “that’s pretty corny...but, it’s pretty catchy.” After a few more listens, it goes from, “that’s pretty catchy” to “that’s pretty damn good.” Electronic music about dancing, partying, and sexual attraction just grows on you in that way. This was the case for this spotlight. Mike & Cody have composed some catchy tunes in this fun and energetic genre. I swear as we’re writing this review, their title track “Let’s Go!” from their first EP is lodged in our heads as a catchy dance track should. Just a funny sidenote, it’s quite ironic that the EP’s called “Let’s Go!,” yet the album art's them chilling on top of a roof watching the sunset (and a random Citgo sign). Anyway, their tracks are groovy and filled with synths with a hint of guitar weaving in and out of their house style beats. Their lighthearted auto-tuned lyrics would have Daft Punk fans givin' them a thumbs up. In their bio, they mentioned that they played jazz growing up, and you can hear that influence in a few of their tracks like “Everything You Do.” In a nutshell, if you’ve jumped on the Chromeo or Cut Copy fan train, then you need to get a ticket for Mike & Cody’s. We’ve got ourselves a seat.

Official Bio:

Mike and Cody are old pals. We used to play jazz together in D.C., then we started making pop in Boston late last year.

We like lots of music - we really like nice grooves, nice chord changes, and yup melodies. We like making songs that make people move their booties.

We put out a few random tunes last year, got a nice response, then spent this past summer working our booties off on writing, recording, and mixing this E.P. We're really proud of it, so we hope you like it and pass on to people you think might like it!
