Artist Spotlight: Nice Cliques

Genre: Alternative Rock, Art Rock

Junkies' Description:
When these guys sent us their stuff and described it as alternative Russian art-rock, I wasn’t quite sure what my ears were about to experience. The experience was great. Nice Cliques are band with amazing guitar riffs and solos, well written lyrics, and some nice keys thrown in here and there. Other than that, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what they sound like. I’ve heard great ballads, great hard jams, and at one point, I heard their keyboard solo sound like some you would hear out an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer song. So yeah, lots of fantastic and different tunes here. And yes, the lyrics are English, not Russian.

Artist Spotlight: Telenovelas

Genre: Tropical Pop, Surf, Psychedelic Rock

Junkies' Description:
Empty, relaxing psychedelic pop with spacey, distorted vocals meets surf. Telenovelas sounds like garage rock merged with a beach party as the sun sets. “This Thing Called Life” is the song that first caught our ear. They have recently been featured on major blogs like Pitchfork and have played the CMJ music festival. We expect great thing from them.

Official Bio:
Telenovelas are a Brooklyn based four piece with a sound that is not easily classified into one cozy genre. Loosely forming in early 2009, the band went through a series of changes first starting off as the solo project of Ritchie San Luis and then evolving into a duo a few months later with help from friend Flemming Laursen. Some songs were written, some people were added and subtracted yet it wasn’t until January 2010 that Telenovelas started to materialize as a project with the addition of Lindsey Ann and San Luis’ long time cohort, Kevin Kahawai. They exchanged ideas, experimented with little noise machines and began working on material loosely based on their not so secret obsession with Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk". Rumor has it that they have five different versions in different keys and tempos! They've slowly cultivated a following by playing many local Brooklyn and NYC shows and recently have been featured on blogs such as Unholy Rhythms, Flashlight Tag, Aurora Vibes, Cactus-Mouth, I Guess I’m Floating, Pop Snacking, Rosekohl, Tympanogram, The Music Junkies, L.A.’s Rawk Blog, and NYC’s Deli Magazine. They were also featured on London based Double Denim Records’ daily blog. Adhering to their DIY ethos, all the music you hear was recorded and engineered solely by the members of the band in their rehearsal space and homes. The final mix was done by Ritchie in a cave somewhere in Brooklyn. This is lo-budget hi fi.

Artist Spotlight: Deltatron

Genre: Electronic

Junkies' Description:
If you were sucked into a Super Nintendo for a crazy party, I guarantee that Deltatron would be the DJ. This guy his making some serious beats out of Peru. The BPMs are slow, but his beats are sporadic which is a great combination. I recommend listening to his song “Monsta” first. It should hook you like it did me.

Artist Spotlight: Black Queen Speaks

Genre: Hard Rock, Funk Rock

Junkies' Description:
Damn, this is a great band. They play some awesome hard rock that has real soul in every song. The vocals have a post grunge feel while the guitar has a classic heavy metal sound. Also, the groovy, funky bass riffs make you want to get up and dance. And you can’t forget that every song has an ass kicking guitar solo. All four guys are extremely talented, and I can honestly say that all seven songs on their debut album are nothing short of spectacular.

Official Bio:
Formed in Houston, TX but hailing from across the country, Black Queen Speaks came together for a common love of the almighty groove. Their sound is an amalgamation of blues, hard rock, grunge, 70’s funk, dance, and soul peppered with flourishes of 90’s hip hop. In short, Black Queen Speaks can best be described as if Jane’s Addiction and SoundGarden got their asses kicked by James Brown.
